PNPs must also give due consideration to patient relation, minimum complications, administration of medications, education and counseling, professional role, health care management, monitoring, safe and quality practice. They must also recognize and meet the need of ethnicity, cultural, race, religion and language diversity, while offering Psychiatric care.

Therefore, the responsibilities of the Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner can be summed up as: diagnosis, analysis, collaboration, care of plan, medical and basic therapeutic procedures and medications, monitoring condition and behavior and emotional support and counseling.

PNP Education

Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner education requires completing following educational process:

  • Earning credential of a Registered Nurse by passing the NCLEX-RN exam for licensure and completion of BSN degree.
  • Few years working in Psychiatric & Mental Health field.
  • Completion of MSN program and earning MSN Degree
  • Advance studies for Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner specialty track.
  • Sit for the Certification exam and earn the certification by passing the certification exam.

Certification & Accreditation

The certification to PNP is offered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center and the credential awarded is PMHCNS-BC.

The National Commission for Certifying Agencies and the Accreditation Board for Specialty Nursing Certification have accredited the ANCC certification.

The average salary of Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner ranges $95,000 & above depending upon the work experience, job location, education and certification and position.
