LSU School of Nursing History

The nursing education in LSU System saw the beginning in the summer of 1929 in the Baton Rouge campus, LA. Consequently, the Louisiana State League of Nursing Education requested to add specific additional nursing courses for RNs in its curriculum that resulted in the introduction of the BSN degree program education in 1933.

In 1937, the nursing department was shifted to the School of Medicine in New Orleans and accordingly "five year program” also known as "combined program’’ was introduced. The Department of Nursing was recognized as a separate and autonomous School by the Board of Supervisors and the status of the School of Nursing of the Medical Center was offered in 1968.

Vision Statement

The vision of LSU School of Nursing is to achieve the position and eminence leader of excellence in nursing field including nursing education, service, research, nursing practice and to reach to the community.

LSU School of Nursing Curriculum

The curriculum of LSU School of Nursing includes both classroom instructions and clinical hands-on experience. The clinical experience to the students for their nursing education is offered to above 100 clinical affiliations located in various centers including New Orleans, Lafayette, Baton Rogue, Folk Pork, Biloxi, Metairie, Chalmette, Shreveport, Thibodaux, Monroe, Covington, Shreveport, Chalmette Long Beach, MS, Hattiesburg, MS and others.

Registered Nurse Refresher Program (RNRP)

Registered Nurse Refresher Program has been prepared to help the registered nurses for making a come back to clinical practice once again. The responsibility to provide this program lies with the Faculty Development Department of the LSUHSC School of Nursing.

Emergent Nurse Leader Program (ENLP)

ENLP is designed to prepare the registered nurses to practice in the leadership roles in both academic and practice settings.

Accreditation

  • The accreditation to LSU Health Sciences Center has been granted by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and School.
  • The Nurse Anesthesia Program is accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs.
  • The American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation has accredited to the Continuing Education.
  • Specialized accreditation to Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center School of Nursing has been provided by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.
