Information About Being a Certified Nursing Assistant in Mississippi

With the recent economic crisis in the United States, many Americans are left fearful for their future. It is an undeniable fact that because of the recession, numerous individuals were fired from their jobs. Only a few years ago, there were so many job openings in America, to the point that most people had two jobs. Today, finding one job alone is already considered to be a tough task. If you’re currently living in the Mississippi area, and you’re wondering on what secure jobs are currently open, you might want to read more about a career as a nursing aide or a Certified Nursing Assistant.

What Are Certified Nursing Assistants?

Certified Nursing Assistants, or CNAs, are members of the health care team that are responsible for providing the basic needs of a patient. This involves assisting a patient with ambulation, eating and grooming. CNAs are also tasked to take the vital signs of their clients. Along with nurses, doctors and other medical practitioners, CNAs also interact with the patient to provide security and emotional support.

Certified Nursing Assistants aren’t employed in retirement homes alone. CNAs can also be assigned in hospitals, mental institutions, long-term care facilities, and community care facilities.

In the State of Mississippi, most nursing aides or CNAs earn about $10-$15 per hour. Their annual salaries are around $28,592 per year. Because of the high demand for CNAs, people seldom find themselves competing with other CNAs or nursing aides for a position.

Training Requirements

Before you can become a Certified Nursing Assistant, you must first undergo training through CNA programs and classes. There are certain requirements that you must have before you are admitted to these programs, and these requirements and prerequisites will vary per learning institution. If you want to have a secure career as a CNA, you must at least have a high school diploma. Students must at least be 16 years old before they can enter a CNA program. The applicants must be of sound mind and health, and must be able to read, write and speak an understandable amount of English.

Free Training in the State of Mississippi

When you’re looking for CNA training institutions, you can choose to enroll in a tuition-free program. While most schools and colleges are offering CNA classes for a fee, many nursing homes and retirement homes in Mississippi have free CNA classes available. In exchange for the tuition-free training you’ve received, you will be asked to join their health care team for a short period of time. You will still be paid while working for that particular type of retirement home. The advantage of receiving free training is that you get to learn more about being a nursing aide while getting paid at the same time. Unfortunately, most of these facilities accept only a limited number of students at a time.

Here are a few nursing homes that are currently offering free CNA classes and training.

• Bruce Nursing Center Inc. – (662) 412-5100; 176 Mississippi 9, Bruce, MS 38915

• Brookwood Manor Nursing Center – (888) 423-8154; 1300 Melody Ln Leakesville, MS 39451

• Heritage Manor of Rolling Fork – (662) 873-6218; 431 Race Street, Rolling Fork, MS 39519

Most CNA classes and trainings will cover important topics that can greatly help a CNA with their work. Topics that will be discussed are: medical terminologies, emergency treatments (CPR), infection control, patient’s rights, and basic patient care (personal grooming, oral care, ambulation and vital signs checking)
