CNA Certification Requirements

Certified Nursing Assistants play an important role in the health care system. They are mainly responsible for huge care required by the patients in hospitals and nursing homes in the country. If a person has decided to build his/her career as a certified nursing assistant, he/she has to fulfill the requirements of CNA certification by passing the corresponding examinations.

Basically, a candidate trying to pursue his career as certified nursing aide is required to study a course offered by various community colleges. Also, he/she has to undergo a training which will cover the necessary skills required by their employers. After successful completion of course and training, the candidate has to pass an examination which will consist of written as well as performance tests.

The written part of the examination consists of multiple choice questions that will cover the overall knowledge of skills that CNA candidates are expected to know. Performance testing segment is designed to test the applicant’s ability to perform various tasks required by a typical CNA.


Beyond the usual requirements to become a certified nursing aide, some states also have their additional requirements for certification. State requirements normally consist of the nursing assistants to be healthy, drug – free and without criminal background. For that, health checkups and background monitoring is done to ensure compliance.

The state CNA certification is maintained from year to year, requiring renewal with updated personal information. Also, some personal qualities are also needed in order to be successful nursing assistant. For example, the nursing assistant should be caring and patient while engaged in a repetitive activity. In addition to that, he/she should also have a strong desire to be a leading member of the team in fulfilling their responsibilities towards patients.

So, in order to be a good certified nursing assistant belonging to a particular state, some additional requirements are also needed to be taken care of with the usual course and training of the certification.
