California CNA Board

If you are attending CNA programs from California, you must understand that it is the responsibility of California CNA Board to see that the training programs offered by different schools and nursing homes, certification test and registration with California and Health care facilities meet and follow the requirements laid down by of federal and state authorities.

The CNA Board comprises of California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Licensing and Certification Program (L&C), California Department of Public Health’s Aide and Technician Certification Section (ATCS) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). These agencies have different functions but frequently they have jurisdictions overlapping each other. It is also the responsibility of L&C to oversee the licensing and certification of nurse aide, home health heads and other nursing professionals. It is the responsibility of ATCS to approve CNA programs offered through colleges, adult education programs, facilities and occupational training centers.

In the state of California, there are various public and private agencies at the state and federal levels, that license, regulate, inspect, and/or certify health care facilities. Even  the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Licensing and Certification Program (L&C) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) are such authorities that oversees the implementation of state and federal requirements by these health care centers.

These agencies also regulate the California Nurse Aide Agency and see that nurse aides, who are competent enough to offer quality, safe and competent everyday nursing care to patients in different health care facilities are certified and listed with the registry.

As per California CNA Board, CNA training program in the state of California must have duration of 150 hours, comprising of 50 hours classroom learning and 100 hours of clinical training and a student must appear and pass the state Certification exam, consisting of written test and skill demonstration test to earn the state CNA certification.
